So far, there have been over 32 million reported cases of coronavirus and almost a million deaths. Health experts recommend the use of face masks to prevent the spread of COVID-19. In fact, several countries have made it mandatory for the entire population.
The N95 mask or N95 face mask is a type of particulate filter mask that meets the N95 standard of the NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health). The letter N means that it is not meant to filter oils, and 95 means that it filters up to 95% of particles found in the air. It is an example of a mechanical filter respirator, which protects against particles, but not against gases or vapors.
The N95 mask or face mask need a proper mesh that is made up of synthetic polymer fibers, also commonly referred to as non-woven polypropylene fabric. This particular mesh is produced through a more specialized process referred to as melt blowing which is used to make the internal filtration layer. The layer filters out dangerous particles. They are widely used in work environments where mutagenic and harmful particles are found, such as garbage collection, metallurgy, and construction. KN95 masks are specifically meant to filter liquid aerosols, particles, and pathogens found in the air, reducing the chances of being inhaled by the user. Unlike the N95, it is subject to Chinese regulations.
The Difference
The difference lies in the certification. The N95 complies with the US regulations of the US Center for Disease Control (CDC), while the KN95 complies with the Chinese rules. In general, all of them are same, only that in this part of the world, there is more information access about North American certification.
Which One is More Effective?
The N95. Why? The N95 standard specifies that the respirator must filter at least 95% of particles equal to or greater than 0.3 microns in diameter. There are also N100 respirators, which filter at least 99.97% of the mentioned particles.
The N95 meets NIOSH established performance standards such as filter efficiency, test agent, flow rate, inhalation resistance, and exhalation resistance.
You should be able to identify their quality to choose something that will keep you completely protected from the virus. Getting the right size is also essential. Also, look for a face mask that is more comfortable to avoid experiencing breathing complications.
